Wine of the Month

Wine of the Month: Roaring Meg

As Mt Difficulty Wines grows, opportunities present themselves from time to time to take on new properties via lease or long-term contract. Some of these vineyards are located south of the Kawarau River and are leased back to Mt Difficulty by the founding partners, and so still qualify for our Bannockburn wines. However, those outside of Bannockburn are used to produce Roaring Meg wines. All of these satellite vineyards are located in the Cromwell basin and all are cared for on a day to day basis by Mt Difficulty’s viticulture team. At almost 80 hectares, they make up close to half of the vineyard area available to Mt Difficulty Wines.

Sauvignon Blanc – This is a ripe Sauvignon Blanc atypical for Central Otago. The wine displays citrus and pomegranate flavours intermingled with dried hay; this moves into a rich textural mid-palate and supple acidity the wine finishes with a touch of lemon zest. This wine is ideal for fun-loving, responsible summer drinking

Rosé – The first release from Mt D of rosé under their Roaring Meg label, this is a beautifully executed wine. Boasting 100% Central Otago Pinot Noir fruit, it is delicate and fragrant. While the days are shorter, the nights longer, we see no real need to stop enjoying a fine rosé such as this, as it bestows its lingering dreams of summer.

Pinot Noir – This wine highlights the cool nature of the season with densely perfumed, wild black raspberry and black cherry along with a hint of complex dried herb. The wine has a supple dark cherry entry with focused flow through the mid palate. Lovely ripe textural tannins rise gracefully out of the mid-palate to finish the wine. These tannins are balanced by the wine’s acidity and more berry fruit.

Beer of the Month: Mac’s Fruit Bat (Passionfruit IPA)

Sitting at a 6 on the flavour scale, we think this high flying IPA is every bit the superhero. Simcoe hops produce piney, resinous flavours and the citrus and tropical notes of the Amarillo, Motueka, and Moutere hops take flight when amplified by juicy passionfruit. Kapow!
